Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is significantly more potent (about 50 to 100 times stronger) than many prescription opioids. Drug dealers are increasingly mixing fentanyl with other drugs, contributing to more overdose cases. Many overdose victims are unaware that they are consuming fentanyl-laced drugs. More harm-reduction efforts are needed to reduce the fentanyl overdose crisis.

A new line of vaping products called Spree Bar contains Metatine (trademark name for the synthetic nicotine analog, 6-methylnicotine).

A modified version of nicotine, the ingredient in cigarettes with addictive properties appeared in the U.S. vaping market in 2023. This product is marketed beyond the reach of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is not considered nicotine even though evidence has been found that 6-methylnicotine is an even more potent molecule than nicotine.
