VibeSolano and our community partners are working together to bring more healthy food and beverage options to a local store near you — to keep you and your family fit and happy! Read on to find out how you can be a part of this movement too.
Why Healthy Stores?
- There are not enough healthy foods such as fruits and veggies being sold in most convenience stores–although Solano has a lot of agriculture.
- 2 out of 3 of us are either overweight or obese, increasing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and even some cancers.
- Impulse buys at checkouts can amount to hundreds of extra calories! Let’s rethink the checkout: 90% of food items at checkouts are candy, energy bars, chips, cookies and 60% of beverages are sugar laden. Healthy checkout saves money and calories, and avoids checkout tantrums!
- Youth are exposed to numerous enticing tobacco and alcohol ads and those products in their neighborhood stores. Flavored tobacco products appeal to young people–and 9 out of 10 stores in Solano County sell these items, according to Tobacco Free Solano.
The good vibe is already happening!
VibeSolano with the help of community partners and motivated store owners, completed 4 store makeovers in 2016. By September of 2018, the total was 9. Catch the good vibes below!
