I have previously worked with Women who were pregnant or just had a baby and oral health care came up often.
We talked about tips to maintain their oral health by doing the following:
Brush twice a day and floss once a day.
Schedule a dental visit while pregnant. If pregnancy gingivitis does occur go to the dentist to remove plaque buildup and gargling daily with a warm saltwater rinse (one teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water)
We also discussed improving oral health by:
    Eating a healthy diet.
Lowering intake of sugary foods and beverages.
Brushing after eating sticky, sweet foods that cling to teeth, such as raisins, dried fruit, gummy fruit snacks or chewy candy and
Quitting smoking or using tobacco products.

I do not have kids of my own, but I have 3 nephews and 1 niece and I have taken care of them a time or two. When it was time to brush their teeth I would have them hum a song or watch a video about brushing.

There is a lot of activity in my neighborhood, I see couples walk early in the morning, people walking their dogs, kids playing in the park, and I participate in these activities, but on my own. I sometimes have a walking partner and work, but other than that since I work I find it easier to do activities on my own time.

I am not a parent, however, I am very close to my niece and nephews and I believe I have some influence on them and being a role-model to them is important to me. I want to lead by example. They see me workout everyday, eat well and see me live generally a healthy lifestyle which includes not smoking. They all take turns working out with me and during those times we talk about how to keep healthy. Topics of substance use comes up and I let them know the dangers of using and how substance use is not conducive with a healthy lifestyle.

I am not a smoker nor do I vape, however, I know people that have quit. Someone I know went cold turkey, it worked for him and he hasn’t picked up a cigarette in over 30 years. I know this isn’t the case for everyone. I’ve heard having an accountability buddy can help, taking up a new hobby and as someone that assisted in getting resources to families I’ve told them about Kick it California https://kickitca.org/quit-smoking to help them with their journey.

Involvement from youth is essential and let them be part of the conversation and have them take the lead on what message should be spread. The youth know what their peers are saying and doing, having them steer the conversation in the way their peers can understand is crucial.

I am not a smoker, but I have known people who stopped smoking and they discussed the benefits of quitting with me. Their sense of taste came back and said food tastes better, daily activities became easier such as not running out of breath when lifting things or going up stairs and overall, they felt a sense of accomplishment and were proud of quitting.

I love walking in Muir Woods or in Berkeley at Moon trail, such a good workout and being out in nature relaxes me even though I’m hiking for hours.

One of my go-tos is overnight oats. I love the following recipe: 1/2 cup rolled oats in a mason jar, 3 dashes of cinnamon, 1 Tbsp. of agave, 1 Tbsp. chia seeds, your choice of fruit chopped ( I enjoy strawberries, blueberries and banana), plant based protein powder, one cup almond milk, mix and put in refrigerator over night and enjoy in the morning!

Yes. After a couple of months when COVID hit in 2020, I realized the gym was not a place I wanted to be so I cancelled my membership. My Uncle was nice enough to gift us dumbbells, since then I have been working out on my own with the help of online workout videos. I also hike and walk while at work. Staying active is key for my overall health and it’s my form of self-care.

Online accessibility is crucial for older adults. Some suggestions are: make sure content is easy to understand by not having crowded pages, have clear and descriptive heading for sections of content. Take into account vision loss, make fonts as simple as possible. Another challenge could be hearing loss, are videos equipped with captions? These are just some ideas.

I have a bike/walking trail around the neighborhood that I live, over the years the paved road has eroded, but I still appreciate being able to take a stroll beside the creek and see have nature around me. The trail leads to a park and it’s a wonderful way to stay active and keep my little nephew entertained.
