Unfortunately, not everyone has access to dental services. Transportation can be a barrier, not everyone has a car so they may have to rely on public transportation and navigating that may be a challenge. Location of the dental office may be too far away especially for those that live in rural areas. Cost of the services or lack of insurance coverage can also be a hinderance. These are just a few of the barriers, hopefully in the future there will be more emphasis on oral health care and these type of barriers will be a thing of the past.

I think there are several ways to increase awareness about baby bottle tooth decay. Education can start prenatally at the doctor’s office and throughout pregnancy. The more the parent gets the message the more likely it will stick. Also, at the hospital there needs to be more of an emphasis on assisting the parent with feeding and then follow-up. Birthing people have so much going on the day of the birth that information given may not fully be processed. Continuous support is crucial for the well-being of the parent and the baby. Another way is at the dentist office, if the dentist sees a pregnant person information needs to be given also in regards to the baby.

My nephew who is 16 years old, competes in long distance running. He needs to be in the best physical shape that he can be in to compete and feel good while doing it. We talk to him about the harmful effects of smoking and he is adamant about staying active and healthy and knows that smoking will damage his efforts.
